AUTOCAR REPAIRS
Since 1974
Celebrating 50 years in 2024

Started by John Tullett in Clapham, South West London in 1974 after a stint post-apprenticeship working as a professional mechanic in motor racing, Autocar Repairs had by 1987 moved to West Dulwich Service Station which has been the site of a garage since the 1920’s. John has been a member of the Institute of the Motor Industry since 1984. Working for several large garage groups after completing his training led to his belief that he could provide a more personal and tailored service in repairing and maintaining vehicles – especially when out of manufacturer’s warranty – than local competitors and led to the claim of offering a Complete Maintenance Service.

We have been a member of the RMI (Formerly the Motor Agents Association) since our move to West Dulwich in 1987 and have been appointed as an RMI IGA approved garage. We support recovery services such as Green Flag and the AA when called upon. We both subscribe and adhere to the Motor Industry Code of Practice which has now been elevated to become the Motor Industry Ombudsman, and whose code has been approved by the Trading Standards Institute.

Our subscription to the IGA and its ‘Trust My Garage’ scheme, again approved by Trading Standards adds to our support of standards. Through the then RAC connection we joined the Auto First Network of independent garages and migrated with progression into becoming a member of the 1Tec Auto Hub Professional network of Garages and Technicians.

As well as the experience that John brings to the workshop, Stephen and Jason have each been with us for more than 30 years each. Our latest members of staff will hopefully follow this tradition. This continuity and depth of experience leads to a thorough understanding of our company’s philosophy and to the building of trust with our customers. We ensure that we are all as conversant with repair procedures as each other, but naturally develop our own individual areas of expertise. Our new Apprentice Luis continues the programme of training which we provide.

John was Technical and Spares coordinator for the Bristol Owners Club for a number of years and managed the removal of the spare parts from Bristol Cars upon their liquidation. First employing and then partnering Graeme Payne, the ex. Bristol Cars parts manager we set up and managed for three turbulent years, through Covid and illness, the parts. I left that position in 2023, leaving Graeme a successful company and a healthy balance sheet with which to continue. We are a Bristol Cars specialist repairer recommended by owners and club members. We have expertise in many classic car marques, many of which were still current within our working lifetimes!
